Chavali Usal

‘Chavalichi Usal’ is a curry made from Black eye Beans.It is common curry like Matki Usal.As matki chi Usal is made from Moth Beans, this Chavali chi Usal is prepared from Black eye Beans.

In Maharashtra, we have plenty of moth beans, mung beans, black eye beans in our kitchen pantry.In our meals, curries are always made from these sprouts.

For vegetarian diet, this is considered as a great protein source.

For chavali Usal, we don’t have to make sprouts.Soaking for 3-4 hours in water is enough.Pressure cook this soaked chavali and cook in masala to make a delicious curry.

Making curry differs in difference region like coastal people put kokum and coconut to make this curry.Whereas in West Maharashtra use onion and tomato mixture to make masala.Some people use ground roasted peanuts to make this curry thicker.

Any version of making masala is good.I always try different combination to have different taste.I am hereby giving general masala recipe which is always a proven method to make Maharashtrian Chavali Usal.

Chavalichi Usal

Chavalichi Usal is black eyed beans curry in Maharashtrian cuisine.It is very good for our health in protein terms.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chavali (Black eyed beans)
  • 2 chopped onions
  • 1 chopped tomato
  • 1 tsp Red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • A pinch of Asafetida
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 6-8 curry leaves
  • Coriander for garnishing
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • 1.Cook chavali in pressure cooker with 2 cups of water.(Do not overcook it)
  • 2.Heat oil in pan and add mustard seeds.When it starts spluttering ,add curry leaves ,cumin seeds,Asafetida and turmeric powder.
  • 3.Then add chopped onion, when it gets properly cooked means when it changes its color to little transparent, add tomatoes .
  • 4.Cook all the mixture till oil gets separate from the onion and tomato mixture.
  • 4.Add chavali ,garam masala , red chili powder, coriander powder and salt as per taste.
  • 5.Mix well and cover it for 2-3 minutes.So chavali will absorb all the flavor of cooked masala.
  • 6.If you want little gravy, add water and let it boil for 2 more minutes with all massala and chavali.
  • 7.Garnish with coriander.
  • Serve with hot roti or rice.
