‘Sabudana Khichdi’ or Sago Khichdi  is Maharashtra’s favorite upwas/vrat/fast special dish. During festivals like shravan, ganapati, ekadashi, navratri, mahashivratri and many more , every family will do upvas or fast and definitely have sabudana khichdi at home.I am making Sabudana Khichdi for Aashadhi Ekdadashi as me and my all family members do upvas on this Special day. Ashadhi Ekadashi is more of a religious procession festival and is celebrated during the months of June- July (Aashaadh Shukla paksha) in Maharashtra. Ashadhi Ekadashi is the day of fast and on this day people go walking in huge processions to Pandharpur singing the Abhangas (chanting hymns) of Saint Tukaram and Saint Dnyaneshwar to see their God Vitthal. The yatra starts in Allandi and ends on Guru Poornima day at Pandharpur.

This khichdi is prepared from sabudana(sago) which is tapioca starch or cassava starch white granules, available in three sizes – small, medium and large. It taste nice and very filling. There is no need to have fast to eat this 😉 and you can have it for breakfast.

Sabudana Khichdi

Sabudana Khichdi is very special dish during upvas or vrat.It is a tapioca or sago khichdi, tastes very nice.It is mostly prepared as breakfast dish or during festival season.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sabudana(sago) 
  • 1/2 cup roasted peanut powder
  • 4 green chilies
  • 3 medium potatoes,boiled
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice(optional)
  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tsp. ghee/oil
  • 2 tsp. cumin seeds

Instructions

  • 1.Wash sabudana thoroughly and soak in water for 1-2 hour.(It is better, if you soak it overnight with water up to the level of sabudana).Don't add more water, else sabudana will be very sticky.
  • 2.Sabudana absorbs water and becomes translucent, swelled up.
  • 3.Add peanut powder, salt, sugar and lemon juice. Mix it well and keep aside.
  • 4.Cut green chilies and potatoes.
  • 5.Heat the ghee in kadhai/pan. Put cumin seeds in ghee and let them turn to brown. Add green chilies into ghee.
  • 6.Add potatoes ,sauté them quickly in ghee.
  • 7.Add sabudana mixture to kadhai and mix it well .
  • 8.Cook it uncovered for 5-7 min and keep mixing to avoid it from sticking to bottom.
Sabudana Khichdi is ready and serve with Curd/yogurt, with a slice of lemon.
